Laboratory study on periodic heat exchanges between water and sediment in extremely shallow flows

چکیده
Extremely shallow lakes are found in the Altiplano, or high plain, of South America, in which large diurnal temperature variation occurs. In these shallow systems, the water temperature is control by head exchanges with the atmosphere and with the bottom sediments. As a consequence, the amplitude of the daily fluctuations in water temperature is reduced by heat exchanges with the bottom sediments. This paper describes a study of the thermal amplitudes in the water column as a function of of two dimensionless numbers, named Π1 and Π2. These dimensionless numbers include the thermal properties of water and sediments, besides the properties of the atmospheric source. Two experimental setups were constructed and used in order to obtain the water temperature times series, and the thickness of the diffusive sublayer.

Experimental Investigation of Flash Flood Resulting from Dam-Break on Bed Sediment Transport
Varied flows such as flooding resulting from dam break can happen due to earthquakes, seepage, bombing, overtopping, mistake in design and project performance as well as causing financial damages and human losses. Unsteady flow during flooding events has a high impact on flow field pattern, sediment motion, ecology and also, distribution of contamination in the river. In this study, the impact ...
متن کاملFish facilitate wave resuspension of sediment
The resuspension of sediment by waves or currents is a major cause of turbidity in many shallow waters. Here we show that bottom-feeding fish greatly facilitate this process by reducing the erosion resistance of the sediment. We use a fish-removal experiment from a large Dutch lake to show that the absence of fish makes sediment resistant to wind effects, and we use controlled lab experiments t...

The effects of surface gravity waves on pore-water release from permeable sediment (k 5 1.3–1.8 3 10211 m2) in shallow water were studied in a wave tank. Our tracer experiments demonstrated that shallow-water waves can increase fluid exchange between sandy sediment and overlying water 50-fold, relative to the exchange by molecular diffusion. The main driving force for this increased exchange ar...
